for this to work, you would need a flexy pipe around 6" in die-am-i-tor foe anoth water flow to go though the systum

Ah har! No I am serious, here is a flow rate calculator: http://www.calctool.org/CALC/eng/civil/hazen-williams_g
Need to measure the length of pipe that would be required and vertical drop from upper river level to the trap.
Then need to know what flow rate the eel trap actually requires.

From the gauging records it seems there were unfortunately only 6 days during June when there was enough flow for the trap to count as having been "operational".

The EA+ZSL have put a siphon arrangement in place and although the flow is less than it should normally be, the trap is operational again and will require regular checks once more, also checking that the siphon is flowing.

Thanks Ed, Keith.

We are back on again so yes please if you can get down tomorrow and Saturday 10:30 as normal for anyone who is free.

Be good if you can get some pics of what they have set up and if the flow is now running clear etc. Hopefully Eel time again Smile

I'm glad there is now a siphon running. I'm wondering how much the building is affecting the eels along there.
I'm away on holiday right now, back next week, hopefully will be able to check the trap the first sat of July.

Here's a picture of the mayfly I found on the walk up to the trap on the 18th. I asked Steve Brooks at the Natural History Museum what it was and he identified it as Ephemera lineatus, though I think it was a close tie between that and E. vulgata. Ephemera lineatus is only found on the Thames and the Wye! I have a couple of other notes on it but not with me at the moment.

I also asked him about the two adult stages of mayflies; when they first emerge as adults they are in the sub-imago stage. They will hang about like this for a while depending on weather conditions; when it is right for mating (not windy and rainy, so they can form swarms) they will moult again into the imago stage which has lighter wings. The sub imago has thicker wings and darker veination as it has both sets of wings for each stage, they peel back one set to reveal the second for the imago stage.

Measure a sample, then guesstimates

I took about around 40 at a time and transferred between the buckets. Measured what I could so the bigger ones and a some samples. Best to also ring around for help if you can. I am always around and Keith, guess also could ask a lockey if they are free.
