Sewage Discharge Notification

Within the next half an hour, Mogden Sewage Treatment Works will be discharging heavily diluted storm water into the River Thames.

Storm water is screened, settled in tanks and mixed with fully treated wastewater before it reaches the river.

We regret the necessity to discharge partly treated effluent in this way. Improvements are already under way at Mogden to reduce the chance of this happening in the future.

Until this essential work is done, London's sewer network - which is Victorian - and other facilities will remain overstretched. This means that after heavy rain there is simply nowhere else for excess storm sewage to go, which is why these discharges, though regrettable, are legal and consented.

Just had a call from the EA tidal fisheries team to say one bubbler boat has been deployed as a precautionary measure.

The dissolved oxygen levels has fallen since yesterday's discharge and is mid 40's at present. There was a slow dip in the level but not the crash they saw on the 5th June.

They will keep the TAC updated if it changes.

Nice one EA Fisheries team....whatever anyone thinks about the EA, the Fisheries teams on the Thames are superb.

Not seen the bubbler yet, but there was a boat named "Thames Inspector" around the storm drain at hammersmith, probably taking oxygen level readings, shows these guys are on the case and doing their best, you cant ask for more. well done the EA. Further to what i said yesterday, all the waterfowl returned to this side of the river this morning.

The unacceptable face of capitalism,
Thames water, Green policies, environmentaly friendly practices, care for wild life and eco systems? my arse,
a simple case of lining their grubby pockets. Pull up the ladder jack, i,m alright. it makes you sick.
They want to sought out the rubbish being dumped, there,s untold coming past my house, (domestic, not trade).
There is a new building project about to commence just south of hammersmith bridge, people around here are going to name it, "Condom Towers", due to the amount of joe bags floating past.
On a brighter note, no distressed fish seen and the waterfowl seem happy enough, (cormorants taking loads of bootlaces).

Following the recent rainfall, Hammersmith PS has in the last hour discharged untreated storm sewage into the River Thames, due to lack of capacity in the existing sewer network.

We are working hard to develop the Thames Tunnel to address the unacceptable volume and frequency of these discharges.

The proposed tunnel would capture flows from the 34 most polluting 'combined sewer overflows' (CSOs) discharging to the river, including Hammersmith PS, and transfer the sewage to our works at Beckton in east London for treatment.

This is getting ridiculous - just how much rain did you have in London last night?

We had less than a couple of mm here in Basildon, seems to me that TW just need to hear that someone spat on a pavement somewhere and they discharge "untreated storm sewage" - just where did all this "storm sewage" come from ............... ?

Me-thinks they are taking the p1ss, or more accurately perhaps, dumping the poop.

No calls about disolved oxygen levels which is good news, but four overflows in 24 hours aint good. Only upside is the rain funny as it may seem, the flow over teddington will have increased so lessening the impact.

...and they just keep coming...

The EA have installed water sampling equipment at Richmond Lock.

Their chap turned up today to take some readings so I asked him about the dissolved oxygen levels. You may want to sit down at this point..........

In his words, 'I'm surprised loads of fish aren't dying as we speak'.

To me the tidal looks dreadful at the moment. Loads of 'sewage scum' on the surface, more condoms and towels etc than you can count and zero fish showing.

Just seen the notifications, bloody awful few days.

Thanks for the info Colin. 30% and below is where the river is in danger, on the 6th June it fell to 10%, just got to hope it does not get there again.

Only help is that it keeps on raining so at least there is more flow coming down.

We are try to find out how much sewage is going in on each occasion, going round in circles somewhat. Have got some historical data about a question, what is the biggest overflow ever and will work through it.

We need a solution and that is the tunnel

so if it rains=flow=sewage discharge=shit=dead fish

As anyone can plainly see there's little more than a trickle over the weir at Teddington at the moment.
From Windsor to Molesey all excess water is abstracted to top up the major resevoirs, Queen Mother, Wraysbury, King George VI, Staines, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth II and Molesey. This water supplies our homes, passes through the likes of us, then returns to Mogden.
Thames water make good the upstream abstraction by pumping it from there back in to the Thames at Brentford and Hammersmith.
