| A new year, a new thread for sewage discharge notifications. 03-Jan-2015 07:38 Hammersmith pumping stationRower notification from Thames Water:Hammersmith Pumping Station (PS) Following the recent rainfall, Hammersmith PS has in the last hour discharged untreated storm sewage into the River Thames, due to lack of capacity in the existing sewer network. We are working hard to develop the Thames Tideway Tunnel to address the unacceptable volume and frequency of these discharges. The proposed tunnel would capture flows from the 34 most polluting 'combined sewer overflows' (CSOs) discharging to the river, including Hammersmith PS, and transfer the sewage to our works at Beckton in east London for treatment. | 03-Jan-2015 11:05 Mogden sewage treatment works Rower notification from Thames Water: Mogden Sewage Treatment Works (STW) Within the next hour, Mogden Sewage Treatment Works will be discharging heavily diluted storm water into the River Thames. Storm water is screened, settled in tanks and mixed with fully treated wastewater before it reaches the river. Work has been carried out at Mogden to increase the treatment capacity during and after heavy rain in our catchment. Regrettably, there are still times that this capacity is exceeded, and with nowhere else for the excess storm sewage to go, these discharges to the river are legal and consented. | |

| Both sites have notified us of dumps over the last week. It's rained heavily a few times but nothing like the deluges of last year, yet we've already passed the annual "2" for Mogden:
08-Jan-2015 10:51 Mogden sewage treatment works
08-Jan-2015 11:39 Hammersmith pumping station
09-Jan-2015 09:32 Mogden sewage treatment works

| I sent an e-mail to mogden pointing to the fact that the river was full of turds along the Barnes and Mortlake area they did reply saying that no sewage was let go so new reports were sent out. but said heavily diluted sewage is screened and then let go,this is where I get a little bit lost it is still pumped in and is still in turd form but no warnings are given I witnessed rowers happily gliding through it .I also pointed out that all the litter along that footpath contains thousands of cotton-buds tampons, condoms, and syringes and it should be there duty to send teams out to clear some of this I got no reply to that I am logging pics of the litter I was going to fish over xmas but it was that bad cheers all

| When they say "screened" at Mogden it has passed through a fairly fine mesh, so is in liquid or fine suspended solids form. No tampons, condoms, cotton buds or solid turds will get through. Also when there is a rainstorm and the sewers get inundated, they store the worst of it (so called "first flush") in big tanks and treat it normally when the works has enough capacity again. The stuff that's discharged is (in theory) mostly rain water that's been down the sewer.
That stuff you're seeing down at Barnes is more likely to be from one of the unscreened sources which are:
1) Hammersmith, Lots Road, Western pumping stations - these pump untreated sewage up to the works but in storm situations they will discharge it direct to the river instead. It is only filtered through a coarse screen (a set of bars to stop big things, branches and the like, going through and jamming the pumps)
2) Unscreened sewer overflows all down the Thames
3) Boats discharging illegally direct to the river
All the pumping stations (except Mogden) and sewer overflows will eventually be intercepted by the Thames Tunnel - when it finally gets built - and most of this will stop.
John Le Surf and myself will be meeting Thames Water at the Lee Tunnel next Wednesday, so we will certainly be asking a few questions. We are going to see the Lee tunnel which is effectively the first part of the Thames Tunnel supersewer project, it is nearly complete. My understanding is that more sewage is dumped into that river than all the other overflows combined, so this will make a big difference lower down.

Apparently now on Mogden:11 Hammersmith:3 but I don't think that can be right, there must have been some from Hammersmith as well in that time, we're not receiving email notifications for them though.

| Twice in as many days? It hardly rained at all yesterday over my way, and it certainly wasn't storm amounts of water. So has the plants capacity been decreased or something? | |

| There was an email that they were doing some maintenance on the tanks and there might be a stink (which there was at Tesco's on Saturday) so could be something to do with that. | |
