Following the recent rainfall, Hammersmith PS has in the last hour discharged untreated storm sewage into the River Thames, due to lack of capacity in the existing sewer network. We are working hard to develop the Thames Tideway Tunnel to address the unacceptable volume and frequency of these discharges. The proposed tunnel would capture flows from the 34 most polluting 'combined sewer overflows' (CSOs) discharging to the river, including Hammersmith PS, and transfer the sewage to our works at Beckton in east London for treatment. Rower notification from Thames Water: Mogden Sewage Treatment Works (STW) Within the next hour, Mogden Sewage Treatment Works will be discharging heavily diluted storm water into the River Thames. PostSubject: Re: Sewage Discharge Notification   Sewage Discharge Notification - Page 18 EmptyTue Nov 04, 2014 11:28 pm

Both Mogden and Hammersmith discharged tonight, in fact I was (accidentally I guess) CC'd on an email notifying the EA bubble boat controller that every site down the river is discharging:

TQ 1682 7565
(Old Deer Pk)
Mogden STW will be storming to river within the next hour

TQ 2302 7795
(Hammersmith Bge)
Hammersmith SPS has begun discharging to river,

TQ 2865 7776
(Grosvenor Bge)
Western SPS and/or Lots Rd SPS have begun discharging to river

TQ 3955 8015
(Bugsby’s Reach)
Abbey Mills SPS has begun discharging to river

TQ 4645 8115
(Barking Reach)
Beckton and/or Crossness STW have begun storming to river

So the score so far this year is now Hammersmith - 30, Mogden - 20

so when all the updates for mogden came on line and the water company predicted 2 discharges per year. are we certain there wasn't a typo and they meant 2 per month, cos that would be pretty close to being right. if they did in fact mean 2 per year, perhaps we could collar a spokes person from said water company and get an explanation for the gross understatement. my reckoning is they would say 'well we have had some unseasonal rain' which if i remember most of my previous 40 odd years happens every year. hurry up the tideway tunnel.

The increased capacity should as least catch the worst of it though, so what gets dumped should be mostly dirty rainwater.   If we exclude the "exceptionally wet" months up until the end of March, we've still had 11 discharges since then, not good  Evil or Very Mad

We had a fair bit of rain over the past few days, it really kicked off on Thursday night with the rain from the so-called "weather bomb" storm reaching the south; By Friday morning all the sewers would have been full, and once again Mogden went off:

Mogden went off again on Saturday lunchtime, it was a pleasant sunny morning, my guess is there was rain over Friday night which took a while to reach the works, as ever this comment leaves me feeling as if I'm defending Thames Water which I'm not, just guessing at an explanation.  Evil or Very Mad

I think thames water are struggling to cope with the sewage at the moment as a main sewer pipe gave way in Castlenau rd two weeks ago they are having to have tankers all around the area sucking out sewage so I would think more will be going in the river with the slightest drop of rain what a system.

Final notified discharge numbers for 2014
Hammersmith - 36
Mogden - 29

I declare Patrick Barker the "Poo Predictor-in-Chief" having guessed the total nearest, within 7 dumps.  Well done Patrick!

Thames Water are awarded the TAC "Golden Turd" award after spending £140m on Mogden works and guessing 2.
lol!

I'm sure we will receive the final tonnage figures for 2014 in due course.
Looking forward to the Lee tunnel being completed later this year and eventually the Supersewer.
