According to City sources, Australian investment group Macquarie has been conducting an auction of a shareholding in Kemble Water, Thames Water's parent company.

The stake sale comes after funds managed by Macquarie sold a 9.9pc shareholding in Thames Water to the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority last year.

Earlier this year the China Investment Corporation (CIC) also bought an 8.7pc stake in Britain's largest water company from Santander Private Equity, part of Spanish banking group Santander's asset management arm, and Finpro, a Portuguese investment vehicle.
Although it is not clear exactly what size stake is on offer in Thames Water, observers believe it is likely to be around 8.7pc, which is also known as a "Thames Unit" as it gives the owner a seat on the company's board.

Analysts have previously speculated that CIC paid between £500m and £700m for its 8.7pc stake in Thames Water.

It is, though, not clear who Macquarie is conducting the current auction for. One insider said the Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund (MEIF) 2 is definitely not selling its stake in the water company. MEIF 2 owns around 22pc Thames Water.

However, bankers thought it likely that Macquarie may be selling a stake for MEIF, the investment group's original European infrastructure fund, as the Australian company is said to be trying to raise a new fund and is keen to show investors it has made decent returns from MEIF's investment in Thames Water.

Macquarie declined to comment.
