| Dave took some, thanks, here they are! Superb, this is the type of pass we will be putting in at Clattern Bridge. Think the idea is that the little ones go up the sides, the big ones wriggle up the middle. Hope they don't all go up this and miss our trap altogether though! | |

| How will the new eel ladder affect our little trap? Will there be a trap at the top of the new one? | |

| Update from Joe today: Hello Everyone Just when you start to draw conclusions about eels (which I’m sure you all do daily!) they surprise you. Yesterday on the Hogsmill, where we have seen one eel in one and a bit years’ of monitoring, the volunteers were very surprised to see three large yellow eels in the trap. Too big to be measured they were released upstream and sent on their way. If you do get eels that are too big to measure please record them as >300mm on the form. When you are entering data you will notice we have changed the way to input the date from the American way (mm,dd,yyyy) to the English way (dd,mm,yyyy)…we were getting some odd dates, and come to think of it, we are in England anyway so we should have had it that way to start with. The fifteenth trap in the programme was set up Friday last week on the Longford at Home Park and just 10 minutes ago I received a photo of the first eel caught. If anyone knows of people who are keen to join the programme we have a training session on the Wandle on June 24th with the Wandle Trust (flyer attached). It’s not too late to offer more training sessions at other sites too. This one does feel like the light hearted final story of news round …… week before last a pair of coots decided to build their nest on the Abbey Mills trap on the River Wandle so that trap will be out of action until the cootlings (what do you call baby coots?) fledge. Doing our bit for eel and coot conservation. All the best to you all Joe--------------------------We will be done at Molesey for 10:30 tomorrow, Ed confirmed as well, lets hope for a lucky one | |

| I reported back to Joe after Saturday and not seeing much flow and spoke to him today.
Looks as if they have dropped the level between Sunbury and Molesey, the level is about 2 inches below where the trap will function properly.
The drop in the level is a result of the new weir being built but still should not have any ecological impact, and it has. Darryl the EA fisheries and Eel guru is on the case it is who we (TAc) consulted with over the weir.
For now there is little point in checking the trap as not enough attractant flow going down, saying that we still need to catch any eels that may miraculously make it up, so lets converse on here about that.
I will be meeting up with Joe early next week to see what should be done.
So for the next couple of weeks or until advised, no need to check it. | |

| What it wants, is a syphon. Should be quite straightforward to rig something up with a long-ish bit of hose :study: | |

| I'm thinking something like a length of this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160773299934 with about 2m poking out the top end of the pass and a big lead attached to hold it down in the river. The hose must be long enough to reach down the pass top channel until it is well below the upper river level. Poking in to the top of the trap box would do it and be most convenient for priming. May also need a mesh arrangement around the inlet to prevent clogging, some kind of trash filter like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121122117835Then just needs a manual suction pump of some kind (or a crazy volunteer!) to prime it. Once started it should run forever (until it blocks). | |
