Attended the 2nd LAAG meeting last in the function at the Doggetts pub by Blackfrias Bridge.

We couldnt make the first meeting, report is here http://www.fishactive.com/news/3320-angling-action-group-formed-in-london.html

We were slightly sceptical about it as we are of course quite well represented in London and are the Angling Trust consultative for the Thames downstream of Staines. So was there a danger of trying to reinvent what is already there, plus the way it all came about.

We shouldnt have worried as the main objective is to get more Londoners fishing and increase access to waters etc.

School participation is one big issue that needs to be addressed, same with getting for example Scouts involved and discovering the benefits of angling. Much talk also on the London youth games and that not all London boroughs enter a team, that is much to do with lack of knowledge/communications. Kingston is a prime example of having nothing much to do with fishing, surprising really.

Many things came up including poaching, enforcement, current bylaws and lack of knowledge about them. Coaching and angling academies, getting more coaches trained, access to suitable stocked waters to coach on. Last thing thing is getting kids to a venue that turns out to be rubbish and biteless.

One major project is to get an audit of all available waters in London, borough by borough, quite some task but not insurmountable. Its not only finding the waters but seeing who owns them, what is the access, fishing rights, stock levels.

The terms of reference were loosely discussed and appointment of officers was agreed to take it forward. There was a slight lack of knowledge of a few issues so was pleased we could offer direct input into process, surprising how much we have learnt in the last few years.

Overall very positive and in no way conflicts with our own objectives, if anything compliments them nicely so all good. I resisted getting formally involved (as an official) as the TAC is a huge task for us already and wouldn't want to dilute that in anyway but have offered some sort of advisory capacity, which I guess comes about through the meetings anyway.

Huge amount of work for those involved and happy we are able to offer support etc. As the LAAG develops there will be plenty to comment on for anyone who wants to.

Cheers

That's very positive Dave, and it seems that all the various groups (too many to mention) concerned with angling/conservation etc. will be very useful as we all move progressively into the near future.

Great that we are involved and I'm delighted that you spend as much time as you have representing our club and engaging with all the groups concerned.

This needs saying on these boards, you are a credit to the TAC Mr Harvey, thank you.

Definitely. Dave goes to an incredible number of meetings to represent the interests of Thames anglers, all on a voluntary basis in his precious spare time. Top bloke doing loads of unpublicised work.

The next meeting of the LAAG is in a few weeks and one part is to establish a where to fish map, booklet for london.
