Boater admits to ‘careless’ driving along the Thames Empty
PostSubject: Boater admits to ‘careless’ driving along the Thames   Boater admits to ‘careless’ driving along the Thames EmptyTue Mar 01, 2011 4:31 pm

A boater who drove a launch along the River Thames at such a speed that a water skier could have skied behind it has been ordered to pay a total of £475 by magistrates.

Chris Thibault was fined £400, ordered to pay £60 costs and a £15 victim surcharge at Maidenhead Magistrates’ Court on Friday (25 February). He admitted a summons under the Thames Navigational and Licensing General Byelaws 1993.

Mr Thibault, 36, of Riding Close, Southampton, was reported by an Environment Agency patrol crew near Old Windsor Lock on August 28 2010 after a number of river users and a nearby resident witnessed him driving the boat called ‘Nearly a Sin’ too fast.

He overtook a French Brothers passenger boat, causing a large wash, and then pulled in front of the boat. Mr Thibault then ignored an alarm raised by the passenger boat’s skipper and continued down the river at estimated rate of 15 knots per hour. The speed limit is 8 knots per hour. He ignored a further alarm raised by another passenger boat.

A resident of the one of the riverside properties, who is also a commercial licensed skipper with a lifetime in boating, heard the sound of a boat engine revving. He then saw a large cabin cruiser travelling down the lock cut at more than 10 knots with a large wash behind it and the wave rose over the bottom of his garden and slipway, causing one of his garden pots to be washed into the river.

Mr Thibault shortly afterwards identified himself as the driver of the boat to an Environment Agency officer and admitted that he “opened it up under the bridge”. He later submitted a letter in which he denied the allegations.

Andrew Graham, an Environment Agency Waterways Operations Manager, said: “Driving at an unsafe speed and without due care and caution is not tolerated on the River Thames and I am pleased with the outcome of today’s case.

“The Environment Agency hopes that this prosecution and the sentence imposed sends out a clear message to boaters that they must navigate their boats at safe speeds.

“Excessive wash causes bank erosion, is harmful to aquatic life and nesting birds and can damage other vessels on the river.”

Anyone spot the deliberate mistake?

Before anyone gets too throttle happy, the press release is inaccurate in stating that the speed limit on the non-tidal river is 8 Knots per hour. It should read 8 Km per hour.
