chinese mitten crabs and red signal crayfish

we know chinese mitten crabs are marching upstream, we know red signal crayfish are marching downstream, it might be a good idea to post where you encounter these pesky critters, eventually they will meet, my money's on the mittens

Mittens are a serious problem really from Walton downstrean. I fish the BRPS stretch at Ferris Meadow and we had to stop in the autumn as it was impossible to keep a bait form getting attacked.

No Mittens or Sgnals around the Windsor area although plenty of Zebra mussels which, of course, are also aliens.

A couple of crayfish have been pulled out by anglers on Windsor race course and someone I know who works for the EA and carp fishes the Thames has found a dead mitten earlier this summer at cuckoo weir ( opposite the race course ) pale

.

Whilst they do at least seem to be few and far between ( for the moment ) it would appear both of these critters have arrived in the Windsor area. I had heard that mittens were as far up as Staines a couple of years ago so no surprise they've travelled the extra few miles.

i caught a crab out of the ember stream last autumn whilst night fishing for chub on a lump of pepperami,i was surprised at the size of the thing,it wasnt a mitten it was very dark looking and about 200mm wide with big pincers

As we have more people on the forum thought it was worth updating this thread.

We know the mittens are probaly up as far as Staines, not sure if someone could confirm that.

Any reports, knowledge of them further up?

And to the Crays, how far down have they come?

At some stage, somewhere they are going to meet, which will be the dominant species.

When the two are put together, the Mitten makes mincemeat out of the Cray in quick time. But whether they will out compete them in the wild is another matter. I am quite surprised at the restricted range of the Mitten's as in some rivers they travel 7rl hundred miles up river. Then when they get the urge to migrate back to spawn they take shortcuts across land, through houses etc in huge numbers. Let's hope that never happens on the Thames.

Sorry only just seen this thread! I do have two as it happens !
Cheap enough off eBay , they'll last a couple of seasons till the crays cut them
apart!
Cat meat will be your best bait. Not sure how well you will do at this time of year,
I normally only net them till October ish. Be interesting
to find out how you get on.
The mole is rammed with them. Look for the deep water
