This petition rather sets the cat amongst the pigeons, so to speak. Discuss!

There have been a number of situations in the past where a lone seal swims upriver and takes up residence, feasting on local coarse fish.
This usually brings out a whole range of views from anglers, from live and let live to the highly controversial.

It seems that in Scotland, where there is a commercial threat, there's no argument, the result is slaughter.

These kinds of things are tricky ethics wise and I think anyone who thinks there is an obvious or easy answer needs to think again.

I would tend to come down in favour of the fishermen. Competition for resources is part of nature. Nature is brutal. After all there are pods of orcas hunting seals around Scotland.

If the seals as a species are not being endangered, and the fishery is not being depleted, it seems like a sad necessity. That's not to say there shouldn't be some thought put into how to protect the pups.
