800th Anniversary of Magna Carta Empty

From Spelthorne Council

This year is the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta in June 1215 and the Borough of Spelthorne is celebrating this important date and the historical part played by this area.

Saturday 13th June ‘The Barons’ Gathering’
A flotilla will cruise from Sunbury to Staines upon Thames, planned to arrive at the Lammas riverside park in Staines late afternoon; departure and lock timings will be advised later as they will depend on entry numbers, lock arrangements and any re-enactments along the way.
We would like to invite you to join in this event. There will be a small entry fee to include a local memento pennant; for all details please visit www.spelthorne.gov.uk/magnacarta

Crews arriving at Lammas will be able to join The Barons Gathering, a once-in-a-lifetime medieval themed fayre which continues into the evening with entertainment and themed food and beverage. Please see www.magnacarta-stainesuponthames.com

Sunday 14th June Magna Carta River Relay
A major event organised by Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead and Runnymede Borough Council with a Parade of 800 Years of Boating of hundreds of boats is meeting at Runnymede itself. Spelthorne is participating, cruising upstream from Staines to Runnymede to join the programmed events. Boat owners wishing to join this event should do so separately via the special website www.thamesalive.org.uk/magnacarta/

Some boats, including those also taking part on Sunday, may wish to moor overnight in the Staines area. Details will be announced when available.

We do hope you will be able to join our local day on the river.

800th Anniversary of Magna Carta Empty

Last weekend I took the boat for a cruise up the tidal stretch towards Chiswick. Cruising downstream along the beautiful green stretch between Isleworth and Brentford (Old Deer Park / Kew Gardens on your right, Syon Park on your left), not another boat in sight. Then suddenly the Gloriana appears, quitely gliding on its way up to Runnymede. With the complete lack of buildings and wild banks, it was absolutely magical. The scene could have been from 300 years ago, absolutely flawless.

On a more modern note, saw the Red Arrows tearing over Richmond on Saturday.

Happy birthday Magna Carta. I think the Crab should run an alternative celebration on behalf of the people though...a danger with all the pageantry that everyone will forget that the victory was in curtailing the monarchy!
