on the news today it was announced that there had been a 98% decline in eels in the thames, whats next a further 2% , what can we do, who should we lobby, comments please chaps, especially from our conservation officer

Jim, there are new byelaws to be introduced very shortly that will state that no eels can be taken for the table through anglers catch. The 'eel netting' licences in fresh water (plus the Golden Mile) will be reduced and then Defra will have to push for a cessation on the eel catch within the EU's fishing fleets.

In General: Do not buy eels to eat! You will have to live without them, in short. Catch & Release until such a time that their numbers are healthy again (if ever?), as this will be within the new byelaws anyway.

Eels are diminishing through a number of reasons;

Over fishing by commercial operators in the worlds oceans, notably surrounding the Sargasso Sea (their only proven breeding area) that is throttled by commercial expoitation. also by Euro operations netting elvers and mature silver eels enroute to the Sargasso Sea... near the Bermuda Triangle!

The resorces available in Britain and the EU, for the european eel to migrate from freshwater sites (Eels will only return to the sea when they are heading off to breed as mature adult fish, they never return, as they die once having bred), with such deminished populations - like eel ladders in rivers etc. aren't enough to assist the few remaing eels to successfully reach their breeding grounds.

European eels (Anguilla anguilla), are also affected by a nematode parasite (Anguillicola crassus, click the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anguillicola_crassus) that effects the swim bladder.

There are possibly many other issues surrounding the decline and no doubt others will contribute as this debate develops. I will also post some more info on the eel and hopefully others (experts in the field!), will do likewise.

It is of grave concern that eel management/assistance, through the use of ladders etc. are not prevelant on the whole length of the Thames where required. I'm all for press releases by the EA communicating that they are trying to implement such change, but it needs to be highlighted as to what is actually being done to assist the eel, today, and where the problems lay in terms of utilising the data to augment that into being. Probably comes down to "not enough money" again! lol

The EA need to inform angling groups concerned, through the Angling Trust and clubs such as this one on a local level, to keep us in the loop. We, as angling concerns, can help the EA achieve their aims constructively, all they need do is tell us what's required and to whom to lobby, Defra?

Good evening all

Richard and Cass have highlighted many of the issues affecting the Eel today, and the ZSL event leaflet is a good indicator of the importance currently given to the state of eel stocks, so I will not add further information at this point, but if you have any questions regarding things eel I will do my best to answer them. We (the National Anguilla Club) are working with the AT, EA, Association of Rivers Trusts and other interested organisations to ensure that the eel does survive. The Eel Management Plans are a central initiative in this respect, and can be veiwed here:

The European Eel - A species under threat.


This long lifecycle along with some natural and anthropogenic influence makes the species susceptible to possible extinction. It is already thought that the species has declined by approximately 99% since the 1980’s. This is alarming and has raised the question as to whether Eel stocks are sustainable. The European Eel is a teleost fish (bony skeleton) and belongs to the super order Elapomorpha and the family Anguillidae. Its scientific name is Anguilla anguilla. There are 15 species and 3 sub species belonging to the genus Anguilla and are found in all temperate and tropical waters except South Atlantic and East Pacific waters.
The Eel has a complex life history, it is a catadromous species (spends most of its life in freshwater and migrates to sea to spawn) as opposed to the Salmon which is anadromous. The European Eel is found in fresh and brackish waters all over Europe including the Baltic, Mediterranean and North Africa.
It is important to note here that the entire lifecycle is not fully understood, one of the attractions of the species in my opinion and a reason why I am currently studying the Eel.
The Larval Stage
Eels are known to spawn in the Sargasso between Bermuda and Cuba; this is approximately 5000km from British coasts. Details of the exact location are unknown as a mature Eel has never been found. The site/area of spawning can be traced back from the presence of progressively larger larvae found at increasing distances from one point source in the Sargasso Sea. Spawning takes place from March - June within a narrow ellipse extending East -West from approximately 48o - 74o W between 23o - 30o N.
The presence of a single spawning location and genetic evidence suggests that Eels are panmictic (from one stock, random mating at a singular spawning location at one time) It has also been suggested that there may be 3 minor sub populations due to variations in location, timing and genetic evidence. These are Northern European, central/Mediterranean and North African. Within days of spawning the eggs metamorphose into transparent blade shaped larvae - Leptocephali and passively drift on the Gulf Stream and North Atlantic drift current at depths of 50m - 300m. As they reach a length of >5mm they change to an active vertical migration, catching currents travelling across the Atlantic. They move between the shallow, warmer waters 35m -125m depths at night and deeper, colder depths 300m - 600m depths during daylight.
In November - April after approximately 8-9 months they reach the continental waters between South West Europe and North West Africa. At this point they are approximately 50mm ( < 1g) It is here they take on the usual Eel - like appearance although unpigmented and are known as “Glass Eels” Most of the 2000 million Glass Eels move in via the Bay of Biscay. They are driven in to coastal waters and start to darken; they are then known as Elvers, 50mm - 70mm in length or 2500 - 3000/Kg.
Glass Eels collect in Estuaries and close to shorelines; this is determined by a number of factors including proximity to continental shelf, wind, tides and currents. At this point there is a clear shift in preference to salinity:
• Glass Eels - 100% salinity
• Semi Pigmented - No preference
• Fully Pigmented - Freshwater
During the transitional period Elvers collect under stones and mats of Bladder wrack.
The majority of Elvers migrate into fresh water but otolith microchemistry studies have shown that a small percentage spend their entire life in the sea or between freshwater and sea.
Once full pigmentation has taken place and Elvers are near river mouths they adopt an active vertical migration process, rising up on a flood tide and carried further up the estuary. This is triggered when estuary water temperature reaches 10oc - 12oc and inhibited if the range in variation between sea and fresh water is >3oc


Once they have entered a river, they undergo a rapid dispersion upstream driven by density at point source. This process probably takes 5 years or so as more 1- 5 year old Eels are found moving over weirs than older Eels. During this phase young yellow Eels or bootlaces start a number of metabolic changes. They turn olive/brown on top with yellow or silver/yellow belly by 130mm they are then known as “Yellow Eels”. These are fully adapted to fresh water, they produce slime, are able to breathe to some extent through the skin and produce a toxin to deter predators.

The Yellow Eel
After this initial phase a slower dispersion phase occurs, this is similar to a random diffusion of particles. Yellow Eels display a sedentary lifestyle and slowly disperse into areas of low Eel density. By day the Eel spends most of it’s time lying in holes, lying flat in the mud with the upper part of body upright feeding at night on a variety of animal foods. Yellow Eels display sexual dimorphism in size/bodyweight with age, as males mature at a smaller size to females and larger older Eels further upstream tend to be female as they have had longer in the system to disperse upstream.
Eels >300mm seem to undergo behavioural changes with a preference for micro-habitats. Small Eels prefer shallow habitats with a strong abundance of aquatic vegetation whereas larger Eels prefer intermediate to deep water with less vegetation. This means that population density and sometimes size distribution can vary depending on depth of the water body. In Ireland highest concentrations where found in shallow waters 1m - 3m deep. Distance from tidal limits, altititude (few Eels found above 100m) natural and man-made barriers, habitat productivity and especially daytime refuges were found to be main factors when determining density, biomass and population structures. Largest Eels were found in upland alkaline lochs.
In colder climates (Scotland) Yellows may hibernate over the winter period and as a result of this or seasonal migration patterns fewer and smaller Eels are active early in summer than later. In addition there is great spatial variation in distribution, Eels are much less likely to be absent from North West Scotland, this is due to proximity to the continental shelf. Mean density is estimated at 4.33 Eels per 100m2 this is lower than in England - lower temperatures and poorer feeding. However, West Sutherland and the Western Isles have densities much greater than this. (Suits me fine!!)

Silver Eels

Once the Eel has stored enough body fat (approximately 1/3 of its total bodyweight) it becomes partially mature and undergoes more physiological changes. This is a gradual process and takes place between spring and September. During this “Silvering process” the Eel becomes dark grey/green and sometimes even blue on top with silver flanks and belly. The eyes become larger and more spherical with a change in retinal pigments from green sensitive to blue sensitive; it is assumed this is for deep sea vision. The pectorals become large and pointed as opposed to paddle shaped.
Feeding reduces also as the gut is absorbed and gonad development begins. Silvering is initiated by a marked peak in growth hormone in early spring, the different events and changes occur throughout spring and summer so that by September all Silvers have the typical features. As the temperature drops feeding ceases altogether leading to migratory movements to the sea.
In general Males mature at 3-9 years and females 5-18 years with the UK range in Males being 7-20 years (300mm - 500mm) and females 9-50 years (500 - 1000mm).
In the highlands of Scotland Eels were identified as 10 - 40 years old on average with 51 years being the oldest recorded, maturing between 17 - 27 years old and reaching a weight of 0.55 Kg in 17 years. In 2006 the average Silver Eel size recorded in Wester Ross was 371.3mm. FRS suggests that the current growth rate for Scotland is 13-14mm per year with males maturing at 25+ years (330+mm) and females at 31+ years ( 420+mm ). The mean Eel length in North West Scotland between 1996 and 2006 was 221mm; this is smaller than the East coast and is due to density dependant growth and higher recruitment.

Migration

There have been few observations of Eel movements once they leave the coast but laboratory experiments have shown that Silver Eels have a heightened magnetic orientation towards the Sargasso Sea in autumn. Energy balance studies using swim tunnels have shown that Eels have the capacity to use fat reserves for constant swimming, day and night for at least 6-7 months (and 5533 Km in 117days) only burning 19.7 % of bodyweight.
Silver Eels are thought to swim at depths of >200m, making use of the cold Canaries current (<10oc) and the North equatorial currents. At these lower temperatures gonad development would be slow enough to keep the Eel streamlined enough to make the Sargasso in 6-7 months. Although this is all hypothetical it would place the Eel in the Sargasso in March-June in time for spawning.

Spawning

When the Eel reaches the Sargasso it has to pass through the Sub-tropical convergence zone, this is where warmer Southern waters collide with colder Northern waters forming a natural boundary of water types. On crossing into warmer water odour imprinting (like in Salmon) may cause Eels to stop migrating, gonad development rapidly increases causing a release of pheromones which would attract other Eels and cause them to congregate and spawn. Spawning is thought to occur at depths of between 100m and 300m, each female produces approximately 2-10 million eggs. Spawning is collective, simultaneous and possibly triggered by pheromones. The Eel is then said to die and the lifecycle is complete.

The Decline

The decline of the species has been reported since the 1940’s in Northern Europe and since the 1980’s in the rest of the continental range. Scientists from Indicang (pan European Eel research group) have demonstrated that Eel stocks are in decline and in some regions, mainly in the North of its distribution area, the situation is critical. Some restocking programmes (Northern Ireland, Baltic Sea and Italian lagoons) have succeeded in sustaining local fisheries but the decline continuewhere stocking has not been carried out. So what are the causes of this dramatic decline?
There are two major stages of the lifecycle which affect the decline in stocks
• Elver Recruitment
• Spawner escapement
Both are linked, it is thought that a reduction in spawning stock, caused by declining Eel stocks may be sufficient to cause a recruitment collapse as in 1980. There is evidence that the decline in recruitment was preceded by a decline in Eel landings approximately 2-3 decades earlier, as the time lag roughly corresponded to the generation period for faster growing stocks. Therefore, initial stock decline could not be caused by reduced recruitment but could be a potential cause of reduced recruitment.

• Changes in oceanographical conditions, possibly linked to climate change
• Reduction in accessible freshwater habitat
• Pollution
• Parasitism
Stock Decline
• Over Exploitation
• Loss of good yellow Eel habitat, loss of wetlands, pollution, over abstraction.
• Barriers to migration, physical - weirs etc and water quality and quantity.
• Reduction in Elver stocking in waters beyond normal migration range.



Recent papers suggest marine events such as a Northward shift in the North wall of the Gulf Stream have caused Leptocephali to follow longer routes exposing them to less favourable conditions and food availability.
Parasites
The nematode Anguillicola crassus was spread to Eel stocks in Europe from the Japanese Eel imports in the 1980’s. This affects the swim bladder and may cause serious physiological effects and affect the normal migration patterns.
Habitat Loss and barriers
Many scientists attribute the decline to loss of habitat and accessibility. The amount of available habitat is thought to have been reduced by at least 50% during the last century. The habitat area currently available is estimated to be approximately 87 000 Km2. Habitat loss is caused by dams, drainage, and reduced water quality.
Sub lethal poisoning
Due to the high fat content Eels are susceptible to storage of many contaminants namely brominated flame retardants. These can affect gonad development and impair the spawning ability.
Over Exploitation
Although the above factors are serious and attributed to the decline they are not sufficient to explain the extent and timings of the decline in recruitment.
When arriving Eels are super abundant and freshwater mortality is density dependant then the effects of recruitment variation (due to Elver fishing) on the number of older Eels is negligible. At some point reduced recruitment through fishing will reduce stock and it is thought this point has already been reached. A total of 25 - 30 000t of Eels are exploited every year due to demand for food and even as bait for other species. Elver fisheries account for 800 - 900t per year or 2.7% which equates to 2.4 billion Elvers which is sufficient to restock the whole of Europe at a rate of 0.1kg per hectare.

Eels are not bred in captivity; aquaculture relies on the collection of seed Eels (Elvers) which are then grown on. This means that the species is unsustainable as ALL Eels sold in restaurants, shops and bait suppliers have been taken from the wild initially. Recently, a number of high class restaurants, chefs and even TV programmes are showing Eels on menus throughout Europe adding to the demand on one of our most enigmatic species.
The European Eel is currently deemed the most at risk vertebrate in the country and is currently on the IUCN Red list.

saw on the news this morning that new laws are coming into force to protect the eel, what kind of twits wait until there is a decline of 98%, oops that would include me, me thinks I need to be made aware earlier, as does everyone else

Just thought i would post a bit about an event i held today up here in the far North, may something similar could be replicated.

I have been involved as part of my trusts remit in education. Last year we held various workshops and field trips looking at freshwater ecology and specifically Salmon, this included an activity day where we had a number of activities linked to the school curriculum. We had a story teller, microscope work looking at invertebrates and scale reading in order to age fish. Fish dissections. Lifecycle game and fishy arts and crafts.

This year we have switched species and are looking at the eel. This was perfect under the current climate and also a total opposite of the salmon. Today was a workshop which involved the story " Think of an Eel" - an excellent book for kids. I did a presentation on the lifecycle, decline and human interaction/impacts. We had eels in tanks so the kids could see the eels up close and personal. I did more microscope stuff looking at ageing using otoliths, also diets and the parasite anguillicola crassus. There was a poetry section and also arts and crafts along with a lifecycle game.

This has now set the scene for our field trips which start next week where we will be electrofishing, looking at eel habitats, invertebrate sampling and water quality measuring. These mini projects have been really well received. The kids love it and are great for spreading the word. Funding for such projects are fairly easy to obtain as it is educational/community based.

Just thought i would let you know in case anyone was thinking of something similar. Kids are the future anglers, scientists, politicians etc. Educate them now and more respect for the countryside in general can be achieved.

something down'ere ?, would love it in every school m8, maybe we should all get CRB approved and get on it, although the workload at the mo might restrict us
