Went to my River Roding (pronounced Road-ing) last night and the river was receding there was debris along
the banks but I managed to take a few photos and it looked stunning.Have sorted out a perfect Kick sampling site
about 100 metres upstream from Shonks mill road bridge,in a swim known as the "Irons".This is not named after
my Hammers but because of the Iron legs I put to help ascend bank. Its flat at bottom of ascend and a shallow gravel run going into a back eddy. Our club secretary sees problems taking samples and wishes us well.

"The Colnebrook, the bit in I think Ferry Lane Wraysbury. It runs from where a small weir spills over for a short distance down to where it enters the Thames at Bell Weir."

This bit is on the Runneymede AC ticket although I believe there is some dispute over rights to it at the moment.

Andy I sent JLS a pm earlier about sampling sites as have an EA meeting on Friday about all the sampling sites. So can I get the locations, grid ref or something similar. They have already talked about the number of sampling sites per river so going to find out more.

Good thing is we are close now to kick off Smile

Willie for the Brook, do you have an idea of where say 2 samples can be taken, same Keith for the Bourne and Colin for the Colne Brook.

We are a Thames club so will be taking it on the big river, have a list of possible locations to put forward.

Once they are all agreed then it begins and the first TAC AMI day Smile

cheers

This helps with grid ref conversion: http://www.nearby.org.uk/conversions.cgi
Note that 6-figure OS refs are 'only' accurate to 100m Wink
This is useful http://blog.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/2011/06/know-your-grid-references/

Hi Dave
re The Colnebrook area i thought may be ok to survey.
I think the grid reference is TQ 01753 72337 postcode TW19 6HG FERRY LANE WRAYSBURY
i can remember the lay out quiet well, there may be a second spot along the stretch that suits, however i'm not an expert yet so not sure as to give yourself a deffo spot.I don't mind going down to the site with anyone who wants to suggest a good area so as it can be agreed proper.
Bye the way,i am still ok to go to the eel trap Saturday 19.05.2012 with Mike to check it out.
all the best everyone

Keith, Colin, Mike, Paul and myself had a tester session this morning at Chertsey, thanks for your time as ever chaps.

Different mixture of species from the Ember, sort as expected, identification is getting easier and no doubt even more as we go live.

Will stick up the dates and locations If anyone wants to come down and see what's going on Smile

hi all
john and myself had a practice today about a mile apart with my section downstream from johns section. at johns section we found hardly any flies with a few bullheads and tiny crayfish. at my section we found lots of mayflies, caddis case and caseless, water fleas and lots of insects and flies not on our list. both areas where similar with water travelling at walking pace or slightly faster over gravel and about 600-700mm deep. might use the dates set up for the thames 23/06 etc

Had a tester session with Wille this morning down at Aragon Ave.

Hundreds of Gamarus, around 15 Olives, 4 Blue Wings, one Mayfly, 5 case caddis, no uncased. Identification is getting easier for sure and very worthwhile getting out.

great to get involved in this mornings riverfly monitoring session.this is my second time doing this, and it is getting easier.it still amazes me the amount of life you get in a little scoop from a net.as dave said hundreds of gamarus {shrimp} and a few of the other flylife that are most important to find,to let us know that this stretch of water is quite healthy.
what i did notice is that we didnt collect as much as the time on the ember, thats probably down to the ember having more foliage, wich attracts more fly life.

cant wait to try this on the brook soon, and ill probably get the answer why the fish in it are thriving.

thanks for picking me up dave.
