Big strong boys required
The gravel for the spawning channel is being delivered this coming week and has been arranged to put it in on Saturday 17th March.
Timing is critical as ever ahead of the fish spawning.
We need volunteers down on the day to help move it from the lock to the channel, then people in river spreading it. The EA managed to secure some sort of motorized barrows, so should help. We may need some other barrows but will let you know.
Waders if possible for the in-river work, life jackets supplied, solid rake if you have one.
Meet 09:30, by the lock
May look to do a clean up round the island if there is time and depending on numbers.
Cheers
James Annear

Cheers Colin
We are a bit short on numbers for Saturday so if you are coming along, please stick your hand up. It is a very short notice events as the gravel has been delivered and cant be left just sitting around. Can imagine what a few kids could do spreading it around.
Let us know asap, cheers
As normal waders if possible, but may have spares, a couple of shovels and rakes.
It will take around 3-4 hours in total and incredibly worthy

Managed to sort my day out for tomorrow, so will see whoever is coming around 9.30 by the lock. James A is ill, so not around, a few others missing as well.
This was very short notice and think that as its the first Saturday of the close season, so a Saturday off, we are a bit short, understandably.
Post up if you can make it as previous

Chaps not a problem about getting along, it's all voluntary so as little or as much at anytime
In the end numbers were good with about 12 people on and off during the day including EA fisheries.
We all put on a proper shift, moved 7 tonnes of gravel into the channel. The motorised barrows didn't turn up and the EA guys are not impressed with the supplier. So all barrowed by hand and then tipped or shovelled in.
Created one area with a slightly deeper pool, slowing up the flow and have plans to put some woody debris in very soon.
Best of all, just after we finished saw a Dace going up stream, lovely to see.
Next tasks are woody debris, getting the fencing repaired, boom across the main sluice from the river to stop all the rubbish coming down and the EA to get signage making this important nursery a protected area.
My bones are aching tonight, thanks everyone who turned up
Pics to follow soon

Boo HiSS ;-)
Actually I think some of us benefited from the exercise (or that's what my aching body tells me) and only being able to load the barrows individually was probably the limiting factor so they wouldn't have shortened the task significantly.
The stream looked lovely when the water cleared with all that sparkling white gravel. What self respecting mrs Dace wouldn't be seduced into letting mr Dace have his way on such crisp clean bedding?
I've really enjoyed the mornings'+ hard labour on Penton Hook:, great surroundings, great people and a great project.
