I hadn't heard of it till last year either, not being local. Martin Steggall told me about it. In WWI, Richmond ice skating rink (now flats) was a munitions factory owned by a Belgian. He employed Belgian refugees who went fishing down by Richmond railway bridge and used hemp. As the pic says in the Thames dace thread, a good spot as you can shelter from rain under there. Apparently, this was one of, if not the first, use of hemp recorded in England for angling bait.

| In front of the Ice Rink at Richmond used to be found some fabulous dace runs 20 years ago+, but the water these days tends to be very coloured... not saying you can't get amongst them when the water clarity is good, but... Catch it right and you can expect 10lb bags easily, although, access is a little wild these days! Hemp seed corner may be a little more accomodating in terms of bankside access, but I've never fished it for silvers? Teddington has serious problems for those bank fishing, and Ham could be good as long as a shoal or two turns up? Just a thought chaps, and considering you would be fishing during the draw-off, wouldn't it be better waiting until after the draw off? Fish do some strange things during this period, and what with the fact that you are missing 4 foot of water plus at low tide, you may be limiting your chances? Sorry to throw a curve ball at yer! | Can one actually get in the water & wade @ Hempseed corner, which is what I understood to be the object of the exercise? From memory & seemingly confirmed by Google Street view, there's a raised embankment there from where one usually fishes, presumably: http://tinyurl.com/6jkh8reIs "River Lane" @ Petersham? If so it gets my vote (provided there should be some fish around) as I've always fancied fishing there. | |

| JUST SPOCK TO ME dad, REF HEMP SEED CORNER, HE Fished it lots of times many years ago, the best way to fish it was around 2' deep, stick float, rod or pole, just when the tide is coming up, then going down again, the location of hemp seed corner is under twickenham bridge/railway bridge, depending on who you speck to, i have know about this for years and fished it when i was around 12, never fished it at low tide as to muddy, Bill Rushmer done a piece on it a few years ago in Angling Mail
im all for fishing it | |

that is exactly where it is keith, my grandad pointed it out to me when we fished twickenham piscatorial matches on that stretch. sadly it didn't fish that well and the best swims were always on the opposite bank by the house boats. further up is where the crane joins the thames and there were some good swims there, again by the house boats. there were more steps up that end too, so easier to get down to the water. as i remember it the access down to the water on this side of the river is better, and there is parking by the water in ranelagh drive. fished it many times and hooked a few big lumps on light tackle. long time ago though!

Is "River Lane" @ Petersham? If so it gets my vote (provided there should be some fish around) as I've always fancied fishing there. Hi Paul, if wading is what you want we're better off at Ham/Petersham than Hempseed Corner. You won't be able to wade out too far on either though as there's a lot of boats. You will catch lots of fish though Rich's point about the run-off is worth listening to though - if this coincides with the run-off (does it?) I'm not sure how it would effect the fishing?.....On the other hand, you'll be able to wade and there'll be hardly any boats

| Not what I want - from the first post on this thread:
"...lets get down when its low down and fish old school wading and trotting with hemp for dace"
Isn't the point of fishing the draw off to take advantage of the unusually low tides? Keith has pointed out that hemp seed corner fishes best around high tide and in fact doesn't fish well during (normal) low tides - too muddy.
As Richard has suggested, if we are going to fish Hemp seed corner, might be best to wait until after the draw off.

| The idea behind this was to see how big the Dace grow and fishing the run off gives you the oppurtunity to fish in unusual conditions, unique to Thames anglers, and one i believe we should take advantage of. As jim said, lets get down and fish old school, wading and trotting. You can fish at Richmond at any time in normal conditions. River lane seems ideal as you can park with ease and gain access to the river via the boat slip. On a personal note, i,ve already booked off the weekend 19th/20th and being self employed, i cant really muck about with the work that is offered to me.
Decisions lads.
20th November, River lane? cheers james

| Tide times for Sun 20th Nov (GMT, but that will be normal local time by then):
- 03:52 - 0.1
- 09:05 - 3.6
- 16:16 - 0.0
- 22:13 - 3.9
An early start would fish through an incoming/high/outgoing tide, it won't be down to gravel until late morning.

if you go on the opposite side to hempseed corner there are steps down to the water. the swims there used to win twickers matches with 25-35lb of dace! there are more steps further along, and the section between the lock and the river crane has quite a few sets of steps. if i remember rightly you wade out quite far. there is parking right next to the river aswell. best thing is to go and have a look down along the the section and see what you think. we would get 15-25 anglers on matches there and there were plenty of swims.
