| Had a wander round PH today, river was looking tip top Noticed there is a tree down which the EA are dealing with: Also one across the spawning channel but not affecting the flow so a low priority: The channel Some numpty has nicked the EA/TAC sign though at the top end, what for a few ounces of metal (note they left the 4 screws) One result was finding some Roach bait | |

| Cheers Keith
The drop in level happens after we have had a bit more water through, its how they manage the levels but should only be temporary. First time I saw it pressed Thames Water over whether they had increased abstraction but is just the way that weir complex works.

| Ah, careful, woody debris, ask a wildlife trust "expert" and they will say that it is important habitat for beetles or something, you can't touch it, have to leave it in (Should these be moved to a more up-to-date Penton Hook thread ?) | |

| Surely that's for woody debris on dry land, not in a water course? | |

| That's what I thought Neil, for example in the Mini-Ha-Ha excess woody debris has dammed the channel completely in several places, isolating stretches from one another at all times except during the biggest tides and contributing to siltation and stagnation. In smaller rivers such as the Crane and Bourne it catches all manner of rubbish making an unsightly dam. On the other hand moving it to the side and fastening it to the bank (Wandle and Hogsmill style) provides a good habitat and looks attractive (in my opinion!) Here is what one wildlife trust says though: - Quote :
- Woody debris
Large woody debris (LWD) in watercourses is an important and integral part of the stream system and is often an overlooked habitat. Dead wood debris in the water offers protection for fish and invertebrates. Removal of LWD should be avoided wherever possible, except where the EA or the Council deem it to be necessary.
Similarly, debris dams are an integral part of the stream system and should be retained except where the EA or the Council deem removal to be necessary, or they form a significant barrier to fish.
Here is the Wild Trout Trust guidelines, now I understand a bit better: http://www.wildtrout.org/sites/default/files/library/Woody_Debris_Apr2012_WEB.pdf

| Keith, Matthew & me might be able to meet you there tomorrow, mid-morning probably about 11:00 maybe? I'll bring a rake or something to hook the big stuff out but we want to take care not to disturb any spawning. I'll give you a call to let you know for sure either way (missus might have other plans...) Cheers, Ed.

| Nice work chaps.
Yes spot on about little disturbance as possible, we are right is spawning/nesting season so the window of opportunity to clean it all out has gone (thanks to the floods)

| The offending twig was removed and the logs obstructing the spawning channel cleared and hidden away in the undergrowth. All health-and-safety was observed, no rules were broken, no-one fell in the channel, Matthew's trainers were completely dry afterwards Silt was diligently removed from fishing platforms EA/TAC project "no fishing" sign has been taken/vandalised from fence in front of the main holding pool Another TAC project complete | |

| penton hook needs a bit of a tidy up, over grown weeds, brambles, I cant do it all by me self, getting a bit much, plus getting old, the path going round the island needs a to be widened | |
