Purely out of interest, does anyone have a definitive list of the record weights from the River Thames?

Not sure I have seen it anywhere, would be nice to see what sized monsters are lurking beneath the waves.

I emailed the editor of the Angling Times about this last year and they don't keep a list. He suggested I contact the EA. I did that and they don't keep a list either.

The club controlled stretches (once you get above the free fishing in Staines) have their own records for Thames captures - I've looked at some of their websites - but I don't think there's a consolidated list anywhere at the moment.

Interesting thread chaps. Smile

So little gets actually reported I am not sure it will be ever possible to be definative. I have predominately fished for Thames Barbel for a number of years and Guy Robbs 18.02 still stands as the mark. I have no doubt that has been bettered and a number of times have heard of fish approaching 20, one was confidently said to me about a month ago.

But in this case the official record is GR's mark.

In terms of a list lets see what we can do, For one the Barbus Barbus is as above. Picture is on BFW gallery.

Over the years there have been plenty of references to Bill Rushmer's 'record' Thames pike at 33lbs 6ozs. There have also been rumours of it being beaten a couple of times in recent years but no reliable photographic evidence has been produced AFAIK.

PostSubject: Re: River Thames Record Weights   River Thames Record Weights EmptyMon Aug 16, 2010 2:50 pm

In addition to Jim's Anglers Mail article last week, I'm contacting all clubs on the Thames that control stretches for their input into a source-to-sea record list.

I'm posting on some of their forums, creating log-ons for some of them and am inviting them to post on here.

I am emphasising swims can be kept secret but that their clubs' concrete captures, zeroed/weighed properly, ideally witnessed and even better photoed would be very welcome.

I'm also stating we accept that any record list can't be 100% accurate e.g. the biggest ever Thames roach that swam may have been caught in 1921 and the details of it lost but we will make the list open to all clubs, accurate and beyond reproach as possible.

I'm also stating there's no prizes, no gain - just answering the questions we probably all think about when we're gazing at our float.

Ok we want to get this rocking and rolling. Steve Holmes has been beavering away for us to get some progress.

From what we have so far:

Barbel 18.04 Guy Robb
Pike 33lbs 6ozs Bill Rushmer
Chub 9.04 Dylan Docherty (From to top Chub list)
Dace 1.03.00 R Page R. Thames Jan 1964
Bream, just had reports of a 15lb'er from the tidal, need more info
Hybrid of over 8lb, awaiting photos
Zander 13:12 Rob Vernon
Perch 5.04
Grass carp - 30.01 Tim Hughes August 2009

This is now going on the homepage of our website and we will invite subsmissions to the list.

We dont want to have all the politics of a recsords committe just get a genuine record for the big river.

To submit a record we will want good photo graphic evidence and witnesses, details.

I think the way forward to to set a mark for the submissions so this mssing bits:

Roach - over 3lb
Eel -
Tench - over 10lb
Perch - over 5lbs
Catfish -
Gudgeon -
Rudd -
Common carp - over 35lb?
Mirror carp - over 40lb?
Grass carp - 30.01 Tim Hughes August 2009
Crucian carp -

Please feel free to add comments on here chaps, what else needs adding, are my submission levels correct?

Entries can be on here or through recordfish@rivertac.org

Steve H give me a shout mate

PostSubject: Re: River Thames Record Weights   River Thames Record Weights EmptyFri Sep 03, 2010 11:40 am

15lb bream! I hope that's true.

Hi Dave - I've emailed or spoken to more than half of the club secretaries or bailiffs for the clubs and syndicates that control Thames stretches.

I'd say the biggest club/amalgamation on the Thames is ODAA and Alan Campbell who is their secretary is now a TAC member and posting on this forum. He was going to put it forward at their meeting. The others I've spoken to on the phone have been positive about our intent but all the emails have gone unanswered, so I'll have to try to get their numbers.

Will complete the other half next week.

On the perch, didn't one of our TAC members catch the largest legit and known fish? Was it Kev Woodthorpe? Or have I made that up from somewhere? Smile

For grass carp - this is the largest I know of myself - I don't doubt someone will come out with larger but it's a starting point maybe

http://www.gofishing.co.uk/Angling-Times/Section/News--Catches/Catch-Reports/August-2009/30lb-1oz-grass-carp-caught-from-River-Thames/

Will crack on next week Wink

Cheers Steve, that is lovely mate.

The Grassie is now on the list Smile

There was a massive Perch that came from Thames Ditton marina but is not counted as it was caught from a no fishing area and the fella had no licence. I know John Gard had an impressive fish last term and that should be the mark if he is ok with it.

Just looked at the list and seen my name next to the 13.12 Zander, as much as I would like this to be true, it definitely wasn't me. Jim's has a 13.7 I think.
I did have a 5.3 Perch in January, probably the same fish J.G had a few weeks later. But as Steve says I think bigger have come out to Perchfishers members.

Surby - interested to know the thinking behind the weights for the common and Mirror carp? http://www.rivertac.org/site/?page_id=170

The common carp one is rather odd IMO as Simon Hartop's 38.2 common was considerd the record for a long time and that should be the starting point for common's surely. Equally I was surprised to see such a high weight for the mirror - has anyone publicised a photo of a Thames 40lb+ ? I dont mean the old wink wink my mate's mates brother has had one last year either!

Mr Bax Smile

Well that is the difficulty and why it is open to everyones opinion and input Very Happy

Trying to get any details at all has and is proving very tough. I did not know about Simons Carp, maybe have not searched enough but will do now.

The Mirror is way out there and dont think theer will very be a definitive answer. The 'rumours' of the 48? recently is anyones guess.

So would you say entries over 40 for the mirror is fair then?

BTW you should some of your pics up on here mate, love to see them Very Happy 13.06 Barbel, ah I remember that night Smile

Don't know how long this will last as a reference point but 38.11 for a mirror is biggest I can find actually publicised:

Does anyone know Adam by the way?

Gents, you are never going to get the true answer to this one. We need to appreciate that this is a bit different from the other records.
In general, most people who have caught the high 30's and 40's (and 40's have been caught) are not going to publicise them. Of course some big fish are publicised (Guy's, Adam's, Simon's etc) and this has been done in an intelligent way which protects the location, but there are some who make the decision to keep it to their trusted circle as they are rightly paranoid of their location and hard work being compromised. Simon was followed around by people for ages and others have been bombarded by PM's and all sorts for months afterwards, so you can imagine why some people opt for zero publicity.
I'm not making a judgement on which is right or wrong, as there is no right or wrong - is up to the individual, if it were me I might opt for publicity but keep the location secret, but whatever fish you have down as the record you can be sure another has been caught that tops it.

So very true Robin and wise words indeed.

The list we hope is seen more as a record of the Thames rather than the glory chasing that can been seen as the national list.

So in essence what is a true and accurate record of what we are fishing for, just how big.

Set to run and run I think.

Surby,

I also have heard rumours of a 48 this year - three different sources mentioning two different reaches some 25miles apart! For me it remains just that a rumour until a photo emerges (or not).

Adam's fish is the biggest I have seen a photo of and hence in my mind in the one to beat - I have photo's of three different 37lbers, plus John Gard's 37 record and Simon Hartop's 38.2.

http://www.skysports.com/opinion/story/0,25212,13357_5395792,00.html

I will pop a pick of that barbel up at some stage.

Best
Guy

PostSubject: Re: River Thames Record Weights   River Thames Record Weights EmptyMon Sep 06, 2010 11:28 pm

Completely agree with you Robin on all you said there and we do accept that.

We can only make it as accurate as the info submitted or uncovered and we have to appreciate that it will be, as any record list is, in some part imperfect. But of course it's vital we make it as credible as possible.

We've also undertaken this task in the full knowledge someone may have caught , say, the biggest ever Thames tench in 1943 and records have since been lost in the sands of time.

Most of the fish that make it to the list will be a true point of reference though and for many of the species highly likely to be the biggest to have ever come out of the river - in which case the list will be a superb reference for all Thames anglers.

I think once there is a formalised list we'll see anglers actively go out and try and beat some entries - and good luck to them.

Same thoughts really gents, I've heard of some true giants being caught from here, there and everywhere and it would be folly to include fish that don't have reasonable confirmation... I've even got an excellent source that told me of a 48 common from the Thames... can't verify it though, so it's another 'fish of myth'!!!
