| Popped down this morning, just 4 eels in the trap & 2 bullhead. 3@95mm 1@90mm Both syphons running fine but the top of the pass channel was again completely blocked by sticks & leaves, cleared that out. https://goo.gl/photos/7ATtn9qqpFZfEvef6 | |

| Dave and I met up at the cafe to check the eels today, a poor show only 2. 90 mm and 100 mm. It has been a slow season for wrigglers at our end of the river. | |

| Went down Saturday morning with Nicola, there were no eels in the trap. 1 bullhead though, seems to be a lot of them this year. Less crabs this year too methinks. | |

| Dave and I checked the trap Saturday morning. The local intelligentsia ha put rocks around the outflow, making it difficult for eels to enter. We cleared these and found one eel @ 95 mm. Three bullheads in there too. | |

| Message from Joe, about a month back:Hope you’re all well. Please may you also forward this message to everyone helping at your monitoring sites? Monitoring stops at the end of September so we’re into the final two months of season now and, as with every year, the data you have gathered is fascinating and at some sites perplexing. We’ve seen a very large increase in numbers coming through the pass at Lea Bridge with over half of all eels monitored showing up at that site. These figures are as of the end of last week – if you have your own site records and notice any anomalies please let me know? Site | Total catches 2017 | Brent | 12315 | Crane | 490 | Ember | 535 | Hogsmill | 29 | Lea Bridge | 17961 | Longford | 22 | Medway | 89 | Roding (L) | 132 | Roding (R) | 1 | Thames Molesey | 94 | Thames Teddington Lock | 1 | Wandle – Abbey Mills | 1396 | Wandle – Morden Hall | 208 | We’ve put together a cracking line up for this year’s Eel Forum including news on significant work to improve the Thames region for eel and also insights into eel conservation work going on across Europe and further afield. It’s our opportunity to properly thank you for all you efforts over the season so we hope as many of you can make it as possible. If you can, please register on this Eel Forum Link https://2017eelforum.eventbrite.co.uk/. Once registered you’ll receive joining details nearer the time. If you can’t make it you’ll be able to get an overview of the data and wider work in the Thames region in our annual Eel Project Report which should be out in November. All best, Joe | |

| Billy no mates today at the trap. Had to scoop the net round the bottom of the trap to find the only eel. It was 95mm. There was no water in the river probably down by 8 inches. Nothing coming over the steps at all. Poor show really. | |

| There were no eels in the trap on Saturday. Water level was still low and siphon had stopped running. Next week we will pull the trap for storage till next season. | |

| Trap came out on Saturday, nothing to report as has been the way in recent weeks. Think the low flows and low tail water at Molesey has been a factor.
We shall return in April | |

| Nicola and I managed to get to the z.s.l. Event today. We were late and got locked out, but we sweet talked the nice man on another gate to let us in. Obviously we had the 20 metre walk of shame, as Joe introduced us to all and sundry. Daryl spoke regarding what the other European countries are doing about their eel policy, there seems to be some differences in measuring and accounting amongst our foreign friends. However it appears that work is being done to improve the amount of glass eels and elvers that pass upstream. More work is being done to remove obstructions and build passes. The fella from Thames water that Dave and Ed will know, whose name escapes me at the moment. spoke about the clever new rotating screens, which have been installed successfully at Walton and are being rolled out along the rest of the water abstraction sites in the near future. Matthew put together a slide show and spoke about the other 15 Anguilla species around the globe, their habits and how the ban on European exports of elvers, effected a large spike in Philippine and Japanese exports. There was a q and a session after and the obligatory prize giving, which we didn't win. That's about it in a small nutshell, and the best I can do after several pints. | |
