| there were no eels in the trap today. are they all going up the new rubbery affair? they didn't last year. can we get results from the hogsmill trap and compare them to ours? | |

| Been an odd year mate, I have results from elsewhere and will get them up.
Will be down midweek and pleased to report have just secured a new job with better hours, and prospects so all good. Plus it's not in London so even better, tired of the commute. Good news for the Eels and TAC activities overall.

| Message from Joe: We are on the cusp of the last month of monitoring for this season, nets and measuring boards should be put away on 30th September. Jake, in the office here at ZSL, has gone through the data we have received so far this season and come up with these totals. Site | Total Eels 2014 | Ash - Colne Off Take | 24 | Brent - Stoney Sluice | 7413 | Hogsmill – Middle Mill | 10 | Lee - Bow Locks | 413 | Longford - Home Park | 240 | Medway - Allington Lock | 4793 | Thames - Molesey Weir | 313 | Thames - Teddington Lock | 10 | Wandle – Merton Abbey Mills | 322 |
Inevitably, as with other years, there might well be discrepancies between what has been recorded on our data base and what your own records show. If this is the case please may you send us your records and we can cross reference your data with ours. As I’ve mentioned before, this year’s eel forum is kindly being hosted by the Natural History Museum. Anyone keen to visit the zoo can still get a free ticket from me at the forum. You can register via this link; http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/zsls-2014-eel-forum-tickets-12852479111The forum is our opportunity to feedback the data across the sites, give you a picture of the eel pass work that is developing in response to your data collection and, of course, to say thank you. Please may you forward this mail on to your volunteers and encourage as many of them to come along as possible. Hope you are all well Joe

| They were a bit daft to post up the competition just after Joe has emailed around the answers. But hang on, how come the answer was 1208 and not 7413? | |

| Message from Joe: Last call for eel forumHi Everyone, I know there are a couple of sites carrying on monitoring to see when the season ends or, in the the case of the Brent who are in the 40 000’s, because they just can’t get enough of eels. Everyone else has downed tools and stopped for the winter so thank you all enormously for another season of dedicated service. It is much appreciated. If you or your volunteers haven’t signed up for the eel forum at the Natural History Museum on the 17th October please do so by the 10th so I can get the all-important sandwich order in. I hope as many of you and your volunteers can come along as possible. Follow this link for registration : https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/zsls-2014-eel-forum-tickets-12852479111Thanks very much Joe | |

| Think the trap came out Friday mate, a few may try and get up but as the temps fall they stay in the estuary over winter. Thanks to everyone who checked it this year | |

| zsl eel forum today up at the natural history museum went well. about 75 or 80 attended a good mix of proper scientists and volunteers with plenty of professional types from e.a and trusts etc.
joe started off with a review of the data that was collected this year from the 14 traps that were monitored, these included 2 new traps one on the loose and one on the colne at ash. the latter surprisingly for me only recorded 'proper' eels 27 of them and no elvers the thought was that its probably a bit far from the tidal limit for enough elvers to pass through.
the river brent guys have been extremely busy this year; when we stopped monitoring in september they had 36646, however the team continued to check and to date have had 51thousand odd. the wandle and bow river sites were both up on last years results. the molesey catch rate was down as you know, the current thinking there is the eels are favoring to use the new tiled pass which is not monitored. the guys from the wandle won a prize for building a platform to relocate a nesting moorhen, which was using the lid of their trap making checking it impossible for a while.
whilst rivertac were awarded an i love eels coffee mug for the work on clearing the trap and run of winter debris. well done dave, ed, keith etc. andrew kerr then gave a talk from the sustainable eel group; they are doing some important work nationally and internationally to try to make the eel industry self sustaining. this includes removing or bypassing barriers to migration and a good re-location scheme. interesting factoid from him; eel mortality from hydro power schemes now exceeds that from the fishing industry.
Aimiee felus from thames21 then gave a talk on her project at salmons brook, a trib of the lea. she and her team are working to clear up this waterway which has virtually no life in it, mostly due to mis-connected drains some 10 percent of homes in the catchment area there are discharging foul into the storm system. then it was sarnies and a tour of an exhibition which i couldnt make. but very interesting day and a good turn out.
