After some hard work and persuasion, our own Dave Harvey has obtained access to live Thames river conditions for you our members!

Angling Data View is a simple one page website displaying “live” data from the Environment Agency’s network of river data recorders on the rivers Thames, Wey and Kennet.

The network recorders are located  at Caversham, Windsor, Penton Hook and Kew on the Thames, Fobney on the Kennet and Shalford on the Wey.

Anglers can view details of river temperatures, turbidity and oxygen levels over the last seven days ahead of venturing out for a catch.

The project is the result of a collaborative project between the Environment Agency’s fisheries team, its national instrumentation team, and Meteor Data Centre in consultation with anglers from the Thames Valley Angling Association and Thames Anglers' Conservancy.

This new angling service uses an existing network of sensors and data recorders that are already in place along the rivers for  monitoring water quality.

A short report on my day trip to see how it all works

The EA have live water quality data (AWQMS) on various sites along the Thames and on the Tribs. It is mainly paid for by the water companies but the EA own the data so hence we have got our hands on it now. Smile

I had visit down to Reading to see where they prepare, test and design and the kit, was fascinating to see another said of the agency, very innovative for sure.

The cabinets are designed by them and can be easily installed for a permanent site, or they have hand held, portable devices that can be deployed and used if there is a pollution incident. Other uses, (and an unseen commercial side of the EA) is hired by say construction companies working by the river, sending back live info as compliance of regulations. The kit uses 3G, very clever.

A few pics, (steady you lads Embarassed )

The pump sucks up the water from the river once an hour and goes through a series on analytic devices

Ha ha, 49 views of this thread since it went up at 5pm. (and 40 of them are mine) The most stunning thing for any winter angler wanting to see temperature and clarity, seeing how it rises and spark Barbel to feed, seeing how the color is dropping out, or increasing, live.

49 views, hmmmm

Great stuff. Very useful, though obviously more useful if they all used the same scales! The turbidity scale is different at each location and the one on the Penton Hook chart is virtually useless.

For our purposes I think you are right, the TEMP and DO are all using more or less the same scales and consequently much easier to compare; TURBIDITY would be easier to compare if a fixed scale was used (0-50) with the exception of maybe Kew which will go a lot higher on the tidal.

I think they've tried to set the range on the axis to fix the max. range of the data measured.  If they just used a fixed range then for example the Caversham might look like a flat horizontal line along the bottom.
Unfortunately though auto-scaling like this can get badly affected by a spike in the data, as has happened on the Kew Barge graph, and there's clearly a problem with the Penton Hook one.

There's another problem with the Kew graph, the axes are not in the same positions as the others which is a bit confusing.

Ian I argued against the DO as could be controversial but was left on. If you see anything just let us know for now.

Must say having the data for Kew is a revelation Smile

It's interesting watching the clarity reduce with this rain, then rising again, priceless for you Barbel boys Cool

Senior scientist at the EA? I just found my dream woman. :face:

In seriousness, great work Dave, I'm not as sophisticated as many anglers here but this seems like a great resource. Would be interesting if people in the know kept a diary to assess which conditions the fish fall to anglers under.

Big Fish Column: Valuable tool to remotely monitor river conditions

LIVE THAMES TEMPS AND CLARITY - TAC exclusive! 00484159%20-%20200x154

Regular readers will be well aware of my weather forecasting skills, or rather lack of them, when it comes to predicting conditions and catches for the week ahead.
The good news is that you can now ignore me completely and yet still be safe in the knowledge that you will have 100 per cent accurate information on the state of local rivers, or at least some of them.
The 'new' information service comes as the Environment Agency has just launched a new internet tool for anglers who fish the River Thames, Wey and Kennet.
'Angling Data View' is a simple one page website displaying 'live' data from the EA's network of river data recorders located at Reading, Windsor, and Staines on The Thames, Fobney on The Kennet, and Shalford on The Wey.
Anglers can click through to the website, available as a link from the EA's website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk and view details of river temperatures, turbidity and oxygen levels over the last seven days.
Stuart Keable, EA Fisheries Officer, said: "Fish are cold blooded creatures and very susceptible to changes in water temperature which exerts a strong influence on activity and feeding patterns.
Turbidity, or 'colour' can be similarly important to the confidence with which fish feed, and healthy oxygen levels are of course vital to aquatic life in our rivers.
By giving anglers access to relevant data recorded and displayed in real time we will be providing them with a valuable tool to remotely monitor river conditions, with the potential to save wasted journeys, maximise their time on the river, and hopefully catch more fish."
The project is the result of a collaborative project between the EA's fisheries team, its national instrumentation team, and The Meteor Data Centre in consultation with anglers from the local Thames Valley Angling Association and Thames Anglers' Conservancy.
This new angling service uses an existing network of sensors and data recorders that are already in place along the rivers for monitoring water quality.
Thames Anglers' Conservancy Chairman, Dave Harvey, said: "Opening up existing EA data is a very positive move forward. This is a low cost exercise from a fisheries team who really understand what anglers would like.
As a long time Thames Angler myself, I know that subtle changes in conditions especially in the winter can mean the fish are more active, so this data will be invaluable.
Barbel for example will feed hard after a colder spell so being able to see the rise and fall in temperatures will be fantastic. Even if just after a great day fishing or a particular notable catch, having real time data to include in your angling diary will be invaluable."

didn't really know where to ask this so stuck it here. I am sure i heard that a new fish pass had been installed in the back weir at molesey and that a camera had been fitted to said pass for monitoring purposes. Question, can we get access to this footage or the stills, or is the data jealously guarded by a meany man somewhere.

Good question chaps.

The camera on the back A weir was put (by the EA) in to monitor fish migration, more for when the fish trap closes, when the 2nd part of the B weir is rebuilt.

It is static and records onto a hard disk and then will be analysed, many hours of video to go through. I think Queen Mary's university have the project from memory.

There is another live camera that has gone in at Romney to monitor effects on the fish pass in relation to Hydropower.

Should be very interesting to hear about the results.

Cheers
