Speeding crackdown

Let's hope they also target the rowers, canoeist and so called coach boats and stop there gung ho attitude towards other river users.It's like the wild west on certain stretches with inexperienced rowers unsupervised, others spread out both sides and down the middle of the river. Rowing before first light and at night with no running lights on etc. etc.

I guess the speed limits are applicable for powered craft only.

That maybe but, according to the report ,they are not just there to check on speeding boats but to make sure the river is being used,by all,safely and legally. Let's hope they do so.

One's lines are only safe with a back lead 2' from the bank when the crews are zooming up and down, that's for sure!

If the rowing coaches boats display a certain sticker there exempt from the speed limit.
Plus the EA boats are mostly out 9am till 5pm so they won't catch the after dark speeders. Last year while anchored up to the back of an island a boat came past me so fast it uplifted all 4 of my anchors and moved the boat a good 10ft from where I was. I have found the trusty green lazer pen flashed at speeding boats after dark slows them down.

My understanding is that they are only allowed to break the speed limit whilst at the side or just behind the rowing boats they are coaching not speeding back to the boathouse with no boats in sight as is their norm.

Coming back to our mooring today and in a 3 hour journey down the Thames we had one sculling eight run into the back of our narrowboat whilst we were underway coz they dont look ....they lost on points then at caversham bridge had a sculling 4 turn across us and we missed them by feet with a stiff helping of emergency reverse .
On both occasions we had verbals from the coach on the bank or safety boat as it was my fault????? they have weird logic and yes the safety boats do speed outside of there remit but we are all forgetting it`s there river .

Wash is sometimes unaviodable ie deepdaughted boat heading upstream against strong flow will make big was even when tarvelling slowly but there is no excuse for dangerous after dark engine testing or even blatant sppeding in the day .
Personally hope they go after unregisterd carft with more gutso than they have shown to date fed up of paying big coin whilst others don`t .

to my shame( ) i almost garroted one last year because he came around the bend close in with no lights & was quickly educated in the properties of 18lb subline!!
